Description

True luxury, that’s how this Japanese delicacy feels. Genmaïcha is based on a green tea (Sencha) with roasted and puffed rice added to it. It is sometimes referred to colloquially as ‘popcorn tea’ because of the few grains of rice that pop during the roasting process which resemble popcorn. Although today it is consumed by all segments of society, this type of tea was originally drunk by the poor, as the rice served as a filler and reduced the price of the tea. That is why in japan genmaïcha is also known as “the people’s tea.”

The naturally present sugars and starch from the rice will provide for a good filler, making the hunger go away when one is between meals. The roasted rice gives a warm and somewhat nutty flavour to this green tea.
